ZooLights: National Zoo

Do your kids like to go to the zoo? Mine sure do. The elephants, the monkeys, the hippos, they love all the animals! Well, if your kids are big into the zoo too, then check to see if your local zoo has ZooLights. It’s a fun way to enjoy the zoo in a whole new way during the winter holiday season.

My family and I live in the Washington, DC area, and the ZooLights celebration at the National Zoo not only includes the zoo all lit up, but there is also a skating rink, train rides and youth concerts. This year, ZooLights is sponsored by Pepco (a local energy company), so kids even have the opportunity to learn about how to save energy. We can even give back at ZooLights by donating winter coats, cell phones and holiday lights. What a special way to see the zoo in the evenings through New Year’s Day.

You’ll find ZooLights programs at zoos across the country, so check in with your local zoo to find out if yours is sponsoring a ZooLights this year. Here are a few other zoos across the country with ZooLights:

Denver Zoo: Go on a holiday light safari with more than 38 illuminated acres of lights, plus more than 150 animated animal sculptures. Get a picture with Santa or enjoy nightly entertainment from ice carvers, fire dancers, aerialists and chorale groups.

Lincoln Park Zoo (Chicago): Your kids will love meeting Santa, riding the Holiday Express Train, enjoying holiday crafts and watching a musical light show. Stop by the Regenstein Small Mammal-Reptile House for keeper chats at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Memphis Zoo: You and your kids will enjoy spectacular holiday light displays, an outdoor skating rink, singing Christmas trees and train rides. You can even have your picture taken with Santa. You’ll also get a chance to see the animals on exhibit in Herpetarium and Animals of the Night.

Oregon Zoo (Portland): Celebrate the holiday season with a million sparkling lights that have transformed the zoo into a luminous winter wonderland with moving sculptures and forests of lighted trees. Ride the light-decked steamer train for a view of the zoo in all its splendor. Bring your old holiday lights for recycling and get a coupon for a free piece of Zoo Store fudge. Yum!

Phoenix Zoo: Your kids will love taking a trip down the Polar Slide, hopping aboard the Endangered Species Carousel and riding on a camel. See lots of animals, like zebras, otters and flamingos that like to stay up late. Be sure to head to Stingray Bay too to touch a stingray!

Have you ever been to ZooLights at your local zoo? I’d love to hear what you thought about the lights and fun family events.
