Polar Express Train

The Polar Express

Watching The Polar Express has become a family tradition in my household. We all get in our pajamas, sip hot chocolate and tune in (several times) to watch as the children journey to the North Pole. Well, imagine my excitement when I learned that we can ride on The Polar Express too (and so can you!).

In fact, dozens of railroads across the country allow pajama-clad children to take this magical journey aboard The Polar Express, complete with cookies, hot cocoa, sleigh bells and Santa. The train ride is no less than one hour and your kids will have the chance to meet the train conductor, as well as several other storybook characters.

Here are just a few of train trips aboard The Polar Express worth checking out:

  • Adirondack Scenic Railroad (Utica, NY): You and your kids will love this two-hour journey to the North Pole and back. Enjoy cookies and hot chocolate on your return to Union Station. Adults pay $30, while kids are $20.
  • Branson Scenic Railway (Branson, MO): Trains depart at 4:45, 6:30 and 8:15 on weekends, and there are some departures on weekdays too. Enjoy hot chocolate, Santa and caroling on-board. Adults pay $34, while  kids are $24.
  • Grand Canyon Railway (Williams, AZ): There are two to three trains departing on weekends in November and daily throughout December, and believe it or not, most December weekends are already complete sold out. This train adventure is that popular. Adults are $30 and kids are $20.
  • Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (Bryson City, NC): This 1 ¼ hour round-trip excursion journeys through the quiet wilderness for a special visit to the North Pole. Santa will board the train, greeting each child and presenting them with their own silver sleigh bell. Adults are $39 and kids are $26.

You’ll find a fairly comprehensive list of railroads offering The Polar Express this year. If you’re interested, I’d hop on it now since many dates and many railways have already sold out. Have you ever taken a ride on The Polar Express? I’d love to hear your feedback.
