I spotted a recent survey from Family Vacation Critic that found that 41 percent of parents who plan to take a vacation this year have not yet decided where to go. While Florida, Caribbean and California were found to be the most popular destinations, I wonder, why have you not yet chosen a vacation spot? A few possible reasons:

Gas Prices: Are you not sure where to go or whether you’ll go anywhere at all because of gas prices? Right now, prices have been dropping, and if you plan to travel through South Carolina, you’re in luck since gas prices in this state are the lowest in the country.

Sky High Airfares: It’s true, airfares are through the roof right now. In fact, MarketingDaily reported over the weekend that high airfares is one of the reasons families are opting for a staycation this summer. Want to Go Someplace New: Over Spring Break we went to Puerto Rico and it took me forever to nail down that destination. We’d been going to Florida for Spring Break every year and I knew I wanted to go somewhere different, but was not sure where. Eventually it became clear that Puerto Rico was where I wanted to go for the local culture and the rain forest.

Time Constraints: Do you have a week to get away or just a weekend? Or maybe you’re still working through your budget and aren’t sure yet whether you have a week or just a few days to escape. Knowing how much time you have can definitely be a deciding factor in whether to travel a few hours by car or by plane.

Big City or National Park: Are there household discussions over whether to go to a big city, like New York or Boston, or a national park, like Yellowstone? Or, are you thinking about the beach versus the mountains? These important decisions can definitely delay making a final choice in the family vacation destination.

Activities for Everyone: Are you traveling with kids as well as grandparents and trying to figure out if there are activities that will be fun for everyone? This is definitely a major consideration when traveling with multiple age groups.

So, do you count yourself among the 41 percent of parents who have not yet decided where to go on vacation? Let me know in the comments what’s keeping you from firming up your plans.
