Did you know that Saturday (March 10) is Passport Day in the USA? I’ll be honest, I had no idea, and I’m still figuring out what it means. All I know is that two of my kids are without passports and passports for the other two are very close to expiring. Not that I’ll be taking any overseas trips on a whim anytime soon, but it’s good to have your papers in order just in case.

In reading up a bit about Passport Day in the USA over at Mom’s Guide to Travel, I can see that the big deal about Saturday is that you can apply for or renew a passport at any regional passport agency without an appointment. Well, that is good to know, particularly if you’re planning international travel in the not too distant future.

It will take the same amount of time to get your passport in the mail (two to six weeks), but at least now you won’t need to wait to get an appointment. My friend Tawanna at Mom’s Guide to Travel is getting a behind-the-scenes look at the passport process from the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on Saturday. I can’t wait for her follow-up post to find out why it takes so long to get a passport!

If you need a passport, make sure to head to the U.S. State Department website for all the info you need, including forms, fees, photo requirements and what to do if your passport is lost or stolen. If you apply for a passport on Saturday (or any other day), you can even check the status of your application online.

Do your kids have a passport? Are you thinking about getting passports on Saturday? Did you have an especially good or bad experience getting passports for yourself or your kids? Let me know in the comments section below. Have a great weekend!
