I’m a big fan of getting the kids outside as much as I can, especially since being inside often means playing on the computer or watching TV. So, I’m excited that today is National Get Outdoors Day, an annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun.

I’m ready to get outside myself, so take a look at seven ways that you can enjoy the outdoors today from previous posts here at Kidventurous.

  • Go to the Zoo: Head to the zoo to see all the new baby animals that were born this spring, including a baby elephant named Malee at the Oklahoma City Zoo and a baby zebra named Terri at the Bronx Zoo.
  • Become a Junior Park Ranger: More than 220 national parks offer badges or patches for completing a series of educational activities as part of the Junior Ranger program.
  • Get Wet at the Waterfalls: If you’re taking a trip to a state or national park, scout out the waterfalls in advance and check into the best time of year for ideal viewing.
  • Swim with Sea Turtles: Get up close and personal with sea turtles big and small. Summer is the best time to snorkel with turtles when the waters are calm. It’s also a great time for nesting activities.
  • Go Fishing: Many states offer free learn-to-fish events for kids, so why not explore the free fishing programs that your state has to offer.
  • Get Underground: Go below the earth’s surface to take in breathtaking caves and caverns across the country. Learn all about stalagmites and stalactites, and even pan for gemstones.
  • Hit the Beach: There are some beautiful beaches in this country. Take a look at the top-ten beaches as rated by Dr. Beach, a professor at Florida International University.

What are some of your favorite outdoor activities? I’d love to hear about some of the ways you have fun outdoors as a family.
