Martha’s Vineyard may seem most suitable for the more mature traveler, but if you’re planning a vacation with kids in tow, this New England destination is a strong choice. From the diverse array of activities to the eclectic selection of hotels, Martha’s Vineyard is a great spot for an enjoyable vacation destination. With activities for travelers of all ages, everyone in the family will have something fun to do. Here are four of my favorite must-do activities in Martha’s Vineyard.

Island Alpaca Company: If your kids love spending time with animals, make the Island Alpaca Company a stop on your tour of Martha’s Vineyard. This island-based alpaca farm is home to over 50 alpacas that roam the rural landscape. The alpaca farm also offers a gift shop where you can buy handmade alpaca items, including mittens and slippers made from alpaca yarn. You can even try your hand at creating this soft-as-can-be yarn during one of the regular workshops at the farm.

Flying Horses Carousel: The Flying Horses Carousel is much more than a typical merry-go-round. This ride was brought to the island in 1884 and is the nation’s oldest carousel still in operation. Not only do children get to delight in riding on this piece of history, but they can also try their skills at grabbing brass rings that are suspended overhead. The final rider to snatch a brass ring before the ride comes to a stop receives another ride free.

Island Spirit Kayak: If you only see Martha’s Vineyard by land, you’ll miss out on a world of water-based beauty. While on the island, take advantage of the water-rich landscape and rent kayaks from Island Spirit Kayak. Whether you opt for a single-person kayak or choose to paddle along with your child, you’ll find your time rowing the waterways a real pleasure.

Menemsha Public Beach: While there is much to see and do on Martha’s Vineyard, take a break on one of my favorite beaches, Menemsha Public Beach. There are lots of beachfront hotels for spending your days lounging in the sand and surf. It’s also close to local attractions.

However you decide to spend your time, you’ll no doubt find your escape to Martha’s Vineyard pleasing and enjoyable. With a wide array of things to do and see, Martha’s Vineyard is a vacation option that everyone will appreciate, making it a destination that will likely become a favorite with your family.
