Giveaway: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die

The giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to the winner, Cheryl ([email protected])! I love a good list. Checking off boxes is one of the most satisfying experiences for me, thanks to my Type-A personality. So, as you can imagine, I signed on to the “Bucket List” craze with great enthusiasm. Summer Activity bucket lists, Concerts to See Before I Die, Restaurants to Try in DC, etc, etc. I’ve “pinned” them all on Pinterest. So when I had the opportunity to check out 1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz, I saw it as a challenge.

And what a challenge it is!  I found an amazingly thorough and well-researched list written by an author who considers all aspects of travel. “The List” (updated and revised since the first edition came out in 2003) is organized by world regions, then further organized by country, state or province. It includes regions (e.g., Appalachian Trail), individual cities (e.g., London, Chicago), activities (e.g., white water rafting in West Virginia), sights (e.g., Taj Mahal) and sometimes an essence of a city (e.g., the music scene in Austin, Texas).

The book is extremely easy to navigate and provides a great stepping stone on which to plan a trip. The hotels she suggests can be on the pricey side and not every listing in the book is necessarily child-friendly, but I felt that the author did consider a child’s point of view when describing locations. She also suggests restaurants that are moderately-priced and even lists seasonal availability or best times to visit places in the book.

1000 Places also has a stunning companion iPad app ($3.99). It holds loads of eye-catching photos, and also allows you to compile a list of places you have been (my number is 36) and places you want to go (that’d be 964), then share these on Facebook, Twitter, etc. It’s definitely a fun way to manage your own bucket list. As for me, I love seeing this book winking at me from my shelf, waiting for me to check off another box.

So, who wants to win a copy of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die? Just leave a comment by Friday, September 7 at 8 p.m. ET and let us know some places you’d really like to visit before you die. We can’t wait to hear from you!
