What are you doing this weekend? It’s the first full weekend of the month, so that means Bank of America customers get free admission to 150 museums, zoos, science centers and botanical gardens in 85 cities across the country as part of Bank of America’s Museums on Us program. No strings attached.

Now in its 14th year, the Museums on Us program is a fantastic way to share arts and culture with your children. Among the organizations offering free admission this weekend:

While free admission is limited to the Bank of America cardholder, most museums have free or discounted admission for children. Take the Art Institute of Chicago, for example. Adult admission is $18, but kids under 14 are free, so a visit for one adult and one child is completely free this weekend. Here is the full list of participating museums and cultural organizations.

If you’re planning to go this weekend, look online to see if you can buy tickets for non-cardholders ahead of time. The Bronx Zoo offers a 20% discount on tickets purchased online. You may also be able to find printable coupons on the websites of the museums themselves or the local tourism bureaus (I saw a $2-off coupon for the Dallas Museum of Art at TourTexas.com).

Not a Bank of America cardholder? Keep your eyes open for special days when your local museums open their doors free of charge or at reduced prices. The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, for example, will offer free entry on Wednesday, May 18 in honor of International Museum Day.

If you have favorite museums in your area or plan to travel to an area this summer with great museums, gardens and zoos, subscribe to their email newsletters to be the first to know about special events and discounted admission days.

Do you like to take your kids to museums and cultural organizations in your area or while on vacation? I’d love to hear your strategies for saving money while enjoying the best that these museums and institutions have to offer.

We love to take our children to the Children Museums when visiting other cities. We often get in free by showing our membership card for the Children’s Musuem in Oregon, which definitely makes the membership fee well worth it. We have done the same w/ having a zoo membership and using it at zoos in other states getting in for free or under $1!
