One of the best parts about a road trip is the fun and funky roadside attractions that you pass whether heading down I-95 or out west on I-40. So, naturally one of my favorite sites is Silly America, which pays tribute to all the kooky, quirky tourist traps you pass on the way to where you’re going.

If you’re planning a summer road trip, here are a few of the must-stop hot spots that your kids will love and will want to write about in their “What I Did this Summer” essays when they return to school in the fall, as recommended by Silly America.

  • If you make it to southwest Virginia, check out the Big Pencil in front of Wytheville Office Supply in Wytheville, Virginia. Or maybe the Giant Roller Skate is Bealeton, Virginia is more your speed. You can even check out Foamhenge, a replica of Stonehenge made out of, yes, foam, that can be found near Natural Bridge, Virginia.

Two other great websites for finding fun and fabulous roadside attractions are Roadtrip America and Roadside America. You can also get Roadside America for your iPhone for just $5.99 for the entire U.S. (or $2.99 per region).

Are you road tripping this summer? I’d love to hear about some of the must-stop tourist traps and funky attractions on your list this year.
