I know I don’t need to tell you that gas is expensive. I try to look away when I’m at the gas pump, but I’m pretty sure it’s over $4 a gallon now. I just read that it’s up 37% from the same time last year. Geesh. So in light of soaring gas prices, are you thinking of shelving the traditional summer vacation in favor of a staycation?

A few years back when gas prices were high, the staycation concept was all over the news. Everybody was looking for a new angle on the staycation. This year, gas prices are even higher, and I haven’t heard peep about the staycation, at least not among major U.S. media. Then yesterday I learned that my friends Carrie at Springs Bargains and Toni at The Happy Housewife worked with more than 80 bloggers to put together staycation travel guides for dozens of cities across the country.

You’ll find guides for everywhere from South Bend, Indiana to Houston, Texas to Washington, DC. So either find your city and take a look at the events and activities in your own hometown or use this mega staycation listing as a collection of travel guides to help you find family fun in the cities you plan to visit this summer.

In spite of rising gas prices, I’m not convinced that families are really taking staycations. I found this article in yesterday’s The Wall Street Journal, which suggested that Americans were still taking vacations this summer, but that 60% of those surveyed said they’ll make tradeoffs by spending less on dining out, new clothes and home improvements in order to afford a summer vacation. Meanwhile, 40% said they’ll get the deal before they make plans.

So, tell me, what’s your summer strategy? Are you taking a summer vacation or a staycation? I’d love to hear about your travel plans.
