I can’t believe it either, but I have not yet seen The Muppets, though I’ve seen Jason Segel sing “Man or Muppet” about 15 times on my cable system’s on-demand channel in between programs. So finally tonight we’re having family movie night and The Muppets has been chosen (shockingly I didn’t even realize we had a copy of the DVD).

I’m excited about the movie, of course, but then I wanted to check out various museums and exhibits where we could get even more Muppets in our life. Take a few of the hot spots I found:

Jim Henson Museum, Birthplace of Kermit the Frog (Leland, MS): If you’re a Kermit fan, stop in this small museum just west of Greenville that’s dedicated to the memory of Jim Henson and his childhood in Mississippi. You’ll find pictures and various Muppet memorabilia, as well as a comprehensive library with pages and pages of Muppet facts.

Center for Puppetry Arts (Atlanta, GA): On long-term display, check out various exhibits focused on Jim Henson, including Jim Henson: A Man and His Frog, which profiles Jim Henson and his most famous puppet. You can also see exhibits focused on the puppets, as well as an exhibit highlighting the technical advances behind Fraggle Rock and Labyrinth.

Museum of the Moving Image (Astoria, NY): Hurry over because the Jim Henson’s Fantastic World exhibit closes on March 4. Not only can you check out drawings and storyboards, but also 15 puppets, including Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and Bert and Ernie. Thirty-minute guided tours are offered at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

NBC Studio Tour (New York, NY): The Muppet Pipes, located in a dressing room for The Jack Paar Program and famously decorated by Jim Henson and Frank Oz in 1964, are now a part of the NBC backstage tour. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in November 2011.

Meanwhile, the Studebaker that took Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear on their road trip in the original Muppet Movie is at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, IN. The museum is hoping to restore the car to its original shape in the 1979 classic, but you should still be able to check it out.

One more spot to check out Muppets is at the Academy Awards. I just read that Kermit and Miss Piggy will be presenters at Sunday’s awards ceremony (Feb. 26)!
