We all like to travel, but travel can be expensive, particularly if you’re travelling as a family. Between airfare, baggage fees and accommodations, you may shell out several hundred dollars before you even set foot in your destination. So, wherever I go, here are the five free iPhone apps I can’t leave home without to save money and avoid sticky travel situations.

Expedia Hotels: A life-saver for me, I downloaded the free Expedia Hotels app on the fly when the original hotel room I booked for me and my kids in New York was not very nice at all. Expedia quickly found rooms near my location, showing me prices, photos, reviews and amenities. However, I already had a hotel in mind that I’d stayed at the year before. I noticed a nightly rate of $189, but instead of booking through the app, I called the front desk and was able to secure the room for $50 less.

HopStop: If your travels will take you to the big city, download the free HopStop app, which tells you how to get where you need to go whether by bus, subway, taxi or on foot. It’s a great app to have to keep you from cabbing everywhere and spending two to three times what you need to on city transportation. I used this with my kids last summer and it made navigating New York very simple.

Kayak: Everybody loves the Kayak app and I can see why. It’s a good all-in-one app and great to have with you if you suddenly find out you need a rental car or you want to hop an earlier flight. It also lets you set price alerts to get the best prices on airfares, get checked baggage fees by airline and keep your entire trip agenda in one place.

Kids Meal Deals: Kids-Eat-Free deals are everywhere, but you just need to know where to find them, and it can be tricky when you’re in a new city. I love the Kids Meal Deals app because it helps you find the nearest restaurant offering free kids meals by day of the week. You can also find restaurants by name or location, as well as get driving directions and share deals with fellow travelers.

Wi-Fi Finder: Who wants to pay $10 a day to get wi-fi from the hotel? Using this free app, you’ll quickly find the closest location where you can hook up to free wi-fi. Best of all it’s international, so if you’re planning a trip out of the country, you can easily find hotspots around the world too.

So, what are some of your favorite iPhone apps that help you save money and keep your sanity when travelling, whether alone or with your family? Leave a few in the comments.
