I love my iPhone. I probably love it too much. It’s hard to remember what I did while sitting at a stoplight before I had my iPhone. I actually felt twitchy the other week when I forgot it at home and was “alone” for a few hours.

Yes, it’s kind of sad, but even without email and Facebook, it’s still a great device, particularly for traveling moms and dads. There are so many must-have apps, and a lot that are ideal to have on road trips. Take a look at five of my favorite free road trip-worthy iPhone apps.

Kids Meal Deals: Kids-Eat-Free deals are everywhere. You just need to know where to find them, and it can be tricky when you’re traveling. I love the Kids Meal Deals app because it helps you find the nearest restaurant offering free kids meals by day of the week. You can also find restaurants by name or location, as well as get driving directions and share deals with fellow travelers.

KIDzOUT: This free iPhone app is a must for families on-the-go. Wherever you are, this app will help you quickly find parks, kid-friendly restaurants, even places to change diapers. This is a great app to have when you’re on a road trip and your kids are hungry or need a potty break. The app also helps you find the closest medical facilities in case anyone falls ill or gets hurt and needs to see a doctor.

RoadAhead: This app is a must if you’re planning any long road trips because it tells you what you’ll find one, two or five exits down the highway. It’s especially nice if you’re looking for a specific gas station, fast food restaurant or coffee shop (Starbucks!).

TripAdvisor: I used this app when I was in Puerto Rico recently to help us find great local restaurants. The app uses the built-in GPS to figure out where you are and suggests nearby places to eat, showing top-rated restaurants first. The app can also help you find hotels and places of interest.

Wi-Fi Finder: Who wants to pay $10 a day to get wi-fi from the hotel? Using this free app, you’ll quickly find the closest location where you can hook up to free wi-fi. Best of all it’s international, so if you’re planning a trip out of the country, you can easily find hotspots around the world too.

Do you have any favorite iPhone apps that you consider must-haves for family road trips? Let me know in the comments section below.

  1. Thank you – these are great – wish I had known about them for my last long drive alone with my 4 yerbold.

  3. Thanks for the great app recommendations! I haven’t heard of them before, but they definitely sound like they will really come in handy this summer, when my family and I hit the road for vacation. The two apps I use the most on our travels are Kindle and Dish Remote Access. Kindle is pretty self-explanatory, but DRA is cool because, all I have to do is hand my kids my iPhone or iPad and they can instantly start streaming all their favorite shows from back home, live or recorded, anywhere we get a 3G/4G or Wi-Fi signal. It’s been a nice time-killer for the kids and when they’ve finally passed out, I usually indulge in it as well or read. We’ve been using this app ever since some of my coworkers at Dish told me about it years ago and honestly I can say it’s never failed! 🙂

  4. I am very interested in the KIDzOUT app, but am not able to find it. Does it go by another name? Or is there another app similar? I’d love to find an app where I can nap my route and locate parks and play structures to schedule rest stops… Or even one to find parks and play structures on the fly. Thanks!!!
