I can’t remember the last time I went on vacation and didn’t spend at least five minutes spinning the flimsy metal rack of postcards (usually at the airport gift shop) until I found three or four postcards to send to the grandparents. I always have good intentions, but in reality, the postcards never make it out of the small brown paper bag the cashier put them in.

I’m not sure what it is that keeps me from completing the transaction, taking a few minutes to write a few sentences, add an address and toss the postcard in a mail slot. Maybe it’s the fact that I can never find a mailbox, or maybe it’s that I don’t have the addresses with me. Whatever the reasons, I was thrilled to find these three free iPhone apps that may actually get me back into postcards.

Postcard on the Run: This idea is genius. Take pictures on your iPhone or Android device (or use photos in your Facebook account), write a message (up to 200 characters), sign your name, add an address and you’re all set. Pay $.99 to $1.69 and an actual postcard will be mailed to whomever you want.

Even more fun, pay an extra $.50 to add a Scratch ’n Smell coating to your postcard, so if you’re sending a postcard from the beach, choose a scent like “ocean breeze” or “suntan lotion.” Or if the image is of a new baby, choose “baby powder” scent. Just enter your credit card details and the postcard will be on its way within 24 hours.

Postagram:  Similar to Postcard on the Run, this free app for iPhone or Android enables users to take or choose photos, write a short message (up to 140 characters) and send a postcard to anyone in the U.S. or worldwide. The cost is $.99 to send a postcard domestically and $1.99 for postcards to go outside the U.S.

What I like about this app is that you’re not limited to sending postcards with pictures you’ve taken or stored on your mobile device or Facebook. You can select photos you’ve saved on your computer or on Instagram. You can also choose from a variety of pre-set cards and images.

Cartolina Postale: Want to add a vintage style to your postcards? Just select a photo from your iPhone, add a stylish background, and send a postcard for just $1.99 to anyone in the U.S. or $2.99 to anyone in the world with this free app.

The app is similar to Postcard on the Run and Postagram but with the added bonus of the vintage backgrounds. Postcards print and are mailed on quality 4” x 6” stock paper with your message on the back. Genius, I tell you.

What about you, do you like to mail postcards when you’re on vacation? Have you tried any of the above apps? Let me know in the comments below.
