My kids are getting older, and easier to travel with to vacation destinations that don’t involve my in-laws’ winter home in South Florida. It is lovely, but I’m getting close to seeing all that Palm Beach County has to offer me and my family. So that got me thinking about travel resolutions for the new year, and aside from traveling less frequently to South Florida, here are five that top my list this year.

Take More and Better Pictures: I’m the worst at taking pictures. I’m lucky if I pull out my iPhone to snap a picture, much less an actual camera. Fortunately, that’s okay. I have the iPhone 4S, and the resolution is already pretty good, but there are a ton of great smartphone apps to help me (and you) take, edit and share perfect travel photos.

Create Travel Journals with My Kids: I feel like I go out of my way to find great museums, aquariums and attractions for my kids, even side trips (when we went to Orlando over Thanksgiving, we didn’t just do Disney, we also did day trips to historic St. Augustine and Kennedy Space Center), but I want to do a better job of saving those memories in fun travel journals this year.

Learn a New Language: Okay, so this isn’t totally travel-related, but I’d love to learn a new language, then take the kids to a country where the language is spoken. I’ve been trying out German with Rosetta Stone, but I don’t know that Germany, or even Austria or Switzerland, are on tap for this year, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll need to try out Spanish instead.

Do Something Eco-Friendly: Ecotourism is hot right now, and I’d love for me and my family to be a part of it, traveling to a destination, like Costa Rica, Belize or Puerto Rico, where the plants and animals are the main focus. Jungles, waterfalls, scenic hikes, it all sounds amazing.

Take a Family Cruise: I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge “cruise” person, but there are many more family-friendly and educational opportunities aboard cruise ships these days. Plus, some of the offshore excursions can be fantastic, and great ways for the kids to learn about each stop.

So, what are your travel resolutions for 2012?
