Siesta Key

USA Today reported that “Dr. Beach,” aka Steven Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University, named Siesta Key the best beach in the U.S. Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, near Sarasota, it was the sugar white sand that led this beach to victory this year, as well as affordable family restaurants.

I’m a big fan of white beaches with soft, fine sand, mostly because it’s so easy for the little ones to walk along these beaches. So what else is there to do on Siesta Key aside from walk along this eight mile long barrier island (as if you need anything else)? Kids will love to listen to the wild parrots, as well as see several varieties of wading birds, like the snowy egret and the great heron. Be sure to also keep your eyes open for the Sandhill Cranes.

Here are the other beaches that made the top-ten beaches in the U.S.

  • Coronado Beach (San Diego)
  • St. George Island State Park (Florida Panhandle)
  • Waimanalo Bay Beach Park (Oahu)

So far, I’ve been to Coronado Beach, Cape Hatteras and St. George Island State Park. All three are completely amazing (look for the beautiful gold specks in the sand if you make it to Coronado Beach), and ideal choices for families.

What are some of your favorite family beaches? Especially if you have east coast favorites, I’d love to hear your suggestions.
