When I take my kids to a new city, or even to one we’ve visited before, I always try to work in at least one museum. I love to incorporate learning wherever I can and it’s nice to take a bit of a break from splashing at water parks, building sand castles and going to various zoos while away on vacation.
So, I was excited to see that FlipKey put together a list of the 50 museums across the country (one in every state) that are worth the drive. Their list features all types of museums, including art galleries, science museums, even museums dedicated to potatoes (Idaho Potato Museum). Here are a few of my faves that made the list:
Woodmere Art Museum (Philadelphia, PA)
Stop by on Saturday afternoons for Family Happenings to enjoy hands-on arts and crafts activities that tie into the works of art in the museum. Little ones will also love the Children’s Garden with its fanciful wooden creatures, birdhouses, butterflies and jeweled stepping stones.
Children’s Museum of Phoenix (Phoenix, AZ)
Kids will love all that this museum has to offer, including an art studio, a comfy book loft for reading, a hands-on supermarket, a noodle forest and an area to ride tricycles (as well as a tricycle car wash). Stop in the first Friday of every month for free admission during Target Free First Friday Nights.
American Sign Museum (Cincinnati, OH)
Who wouldn’t love a museum that’s all about signs? Take a guided tour to learn the stories behind individual signs in the museum. Even better, stop in on a weekday when the tour includes a visit to the on-site neon shop where you and your kids can learn all about how neon signs are made.
National Mustard Museum (Middleton, WI)
Just west of Madison, you’ll find an entire museum dedicated to one of the most popular condiments: mustard (in case I had to tell you). You can view more than 5,600 jars of mustard from all 50 states and more than 70 countries, as well as vintage mustard ads and the Great Wall of Mustard.
Museum of Geology (Rapid City, SD)
I went to South Dakota last year, and it was awesome, so I can only imagine how cool the Museum of Geology must be. Look for the annual Dinosaur Extravaganza on April 12 and be sure to explore the fossils and mineral displays, as well as the special Kids’ Zone with plenty of hands-on experiences.
Make sure to check out FlipKey’s full list of 50 museums worth the drive. Did any of your favorites make the list? Let me know in the comments section below.
