While most kids across the country have already gone back to school, mine go back next week. Back-to-School Night is this Thursday and with three kids in elementary school, I know I’m going to be overwhelmed with curriculum outlines, committee sign-up sheets and spirit wear order forms. It may be time for another vacation. Fortunately, September and October, also known as “shoulder season,” is a great time to get away for families that want to escape and save money at the same time.
FlipKey, which specializes in vacation rentals, recently put together a list of the top-five destinations to visit during shoulder season. As a side note, I’ve booked home rentals in the U.S. and abroad through both FlipKey and HomeAway and can’t speak more highly of booking a vacation rental. It’s a great way to travel as a family.
Anyway, here are the five fantastic spots to consider if you want to take a quick family trip to celebrate the start of school and save money at the same time:
Outer Banks, North Carolina
The Outer Banks is super popular in the summer, and during shoulder season, you can save up to 50% on a vacation rental while still enjoying weather warm enough for riding the waves, flying kites and building sand castles. Be sure to get in some mini-golf and pay a visit to the Children at Play Museum too.
Head up to Delaware to save up to 41% on a vacation rental while enjoying so much that Delaware has to offer, like Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington and Jungle Jim’s Adventure World in Rehoboth Beach. Whether you want to explore parks, take in history or play on the beach, Delaware is a great pick.
The Florida Panhandle, which includes Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City, among others, is a great spot to visit with kids. Even better, you can save up to 33% on rentals. Hit the beach or try something different like the Historic Pensacola Village or Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City.
North Carolina Coast
Sure, there’s the Outer banks in North Carolina, but it’s also worth checking out other cities on the coast, like Emerald Isle, Wilmington and New Bern, for big savings. Try Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach for history or head to Airlie Gardens in Wilmington for beautiful gardens and landscapes.
There are so many fun and fabulous places to take kids on the Jersey Shore, like Cape May, Avalon and Stone Harbor, and you’ll save up to 26% too on rentals. Try your skill at boogie boarding, swim with dolphins or just take a long walk on one of the beautiful beaches in New Jersey.
