This morning, I had the opportunity to take part in a satellite media tour (SMT) to share findings from a new survey on summer vacations that was conducted by Choice Hotels and FamilyFun magazine. I was interviewed by 20+ radio and television stations, like WJHL-TV (click the link to watch the news segment) in Tennessee, live from Six Flags America. I sat right in front of the Apocalypse roller coaster, and even got to take a ride myself when the interviews were complete!
So, what were some of the top findings? Well, not only is the staycation quickly becoming a part of the past, but more families are getting out there to take vacations and doing so in bigger numbers. Take a look at a few of the results from this survey:
Gadgets Rule the Backseat: 61% of families plan to take three to five gadgets along with them on their vacations, including smartphones (68%), GPS navigation systems (49%) and laptops (42%). Further, 37% plan to bring along a tablet, like an iPad, on their family adventures this summer.
Road Trip Pet Peeves: The number one pet peeve among vacationing families is traffic (57%), which is one reason I talked so much this morning about the free Waze app, which helps you to navigate around traffic jams and construction delays. Other pet peeves include rude drivers (39%) and car trouble (36%).
Where Families are Going: Families love a classic beach road trip, which was the top destination pick for 58% of families surveyed. Meanwhile, nearly half (48%) said they were planning vacations to theme parks, which was a big reason we were at Six Flags America this morning (so much fun!).
Figuring Out Where to Stay: Among traveling families, 73% cited affordability as a key factor when deciding where to stay when they travel. Families also liked free breakfast (50%) and pools (49%). Be sure to check out my Today.com article from September on the Top 10 Free Hotel Breakfasts.
Famous Travel Companions: In the survey, respondents revealed that the Obamas were the top pick among families they’d most like to take with them on a road trip (23%). A close second (22%) was Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and their clan.
