How To: Stock Up a Family Vacation Rental (Checklist)

Family Vacation Rental Home We’re here in Orlando staying the week at a lovely vacation rental just minutes from Walt Disney World that we booked through HomeAway. This is our first time staying off-property, and with ten of us on this trip, a rental home seemed like the way to go.

It’s only our second day here, and after a good night’s sleep with the kids in their own rooms, I still think this is the best bet for us. However, I failed to consider all the household items we needed that really aren’t considerations in a hotel (e.g., bath soap, toilet paper, etc.).

After two trips to Publix, I think we’re good to go for the week. So I put together a quick checklist that you might want to use the next time you plan to stay in a vacation rental (in addition to all the food and drinks you’ll pick up).

Family Mealtimes

  • Condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.)
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Plastic wrap (for wrapping up leftovers)
  • Salt & pepper
  • Ziploc bags (for snacks)

Cleaning Up the Kitchen

  • Dish soap
  • Dishwasher detergent
  • Multi-purpose cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Sponges
  • Trash bags

Washing Up

  • Bath soap
  • Body lotion
  • Conditioner
  • Dryer sheets
  • Hair dryer
  • Hand soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Shampoo

Not Feeling So Well

  • Bandages
  • Children’s Acetaminophen
  • Ibuprofen
  • Thermometer

Miscellaneous

  • AA batteries
  • Air freshener
  • Nightlight(s)
  • WD-40 (we have a squeaky door)

Don’t forget that if you’re planning to eat many of your meals in the vacation rental, remember to read label instructions if you’re picking up any packaged foods, like macaroni & cheese or brownie mix. These often require butter, oil or milk — items you usually have on hand at home — so you’ll need to pick up these extras too.

Have I missed anything on my Family Vacation Rental Checklist? Let me know. I’d love to hear what you bring with you when you rent out a vacation home with your family.
