10 Fun Things to Do as a Family at the Beach

mexico sunriseI feel like it’s been ages since I’ve been to the beach with my kids. I almost can’t remember what to do at the beach besides listen to my iPod and zone out while enjoying the sunshine. Since we’re heading to the beaches of Florida next month, I thought I’d jot down 10 fun ways to enjoy the beach as a family. Here you go:

1. Build a Sandcastle. Sure, this is a given. Kids love to build sandcastles. My kids would probably shovel sand and build moats all day if they had their way (sounds good to me), so don’t forget the pails and various castle-building plastic toys before you hit the beach.

2. Have a Family Beach Clean-Up: Before you go back to your car after a fun day at the beach, spend 30 minutes walking the beach to pick up trash and marine debris. Bring more than one bag to separate recyclables from other trash and talk to your kids about the importance of keeping our beaches clean.

3. Throw Around a Frisbee: Bring a Frisbee or two to toss around with the kids. Or, bring along one of those Velcro paddle ball sets, which are fairly easy for small children to use. Another good choice is badminton, even if you just hit the birdie without a net.

4. Explore Tide Pools: Do some quick research on your beach since you should be able to find sea life, like sand dollars and minnows, lurking in the tide pools left behind after the tide has gone back out to sea.

5. Have a Picnic Lunch:  Pack a picnic basket with sandwiches, water bottles, fruits, pretzels and cut-up vegetables. Don’t forget napkins as well as a picnic blanket. This is a nice way to enjoy a surfside lunch without having to partake in the greasy burgers and fries from the beach stands.

6. Collect Seashells: Who doesn’t love to walk the beach to collect seashells along the way? Bring along a bucket and keep an eagle eye to search for treasures in the sand. Check out these beachcombing tips before you go to make the most of your treasure hunt.

7. Roast Marshmallows at a Bonfire: If your beach allows it, have a bonfire in the evening and roast marshmallows. What a great way to cap off a fun day at the beach. Bring along a radio for some tunes and some sticks for roasting marshmallows.

8. Write a Message in the Sand: Grab a stick or use your fingers and create a message in the sand, whether “Summer 2014” or “We {Heart} Ocean City,” then take some fun pictures next to your message to share on Facebook or Instagram.

9. Watch the Sunset (or Sunrise): Don’t let a beach vacation pass you by without getting out on the beach for the sunrise or sunset. Personally, I’m a big sunrise person (check out this sunrise shot I took in Mexico in December). Relax and enjoy the beautiful view.

10. Take Pictures: Don’t forget to capture the memories of your day at the beach by taking lots of pictures of your kids doing all of the above activities. Share them on social media for friends and family to see. Maybe even create your own hashtag to easily follow your vacation in pictures.
